TOC #217: How To Make Them Hoot and Holler
(February 18, 2025) How To Make Them Get That You GET Them
There’s a certain kind of laugh you only get with a real friend.
Not the fake ha-ha-ha, but the deep, guttural cackle-and-wheeze combo that leaves you gasping for air, not caring that you look insane, wondering if you're gonna puke.
The kind that makes your stomach hurt, your eyes water, your brain fire off a little “we are SAFE here” signal.
The kind of laugh that only happens when you’re with someone who gets you in a way that feels like no one ever has.
Like maybe, in another life, you two were old ladies sitting on a porch somewhere, wrapped in blankets, cackling over the same dumb inside jokes.
Or maybe you were two squirrels collecting nuts and climbing trees.
Or maybe you were two girls with vision baggies texting about nutsacks.
That’s how it feels with Xanthe.
Specifically, when Xanthe is on the other side of the pillow fort, listening to me proudly proclaiming my would-send-me-to-jail lore, egging me on to send the dirty text, hooting and hollering about folliculating all over town.
If anyone were to hear our conversations, it would sound to them like we're speaking in code — but we're just speaking Shantel and Edna, our own personal language, which more often than not is simply sentence fragments and interrupting and knowing exactly which thought is coming next.
Because that’s what happens when you find a person who truly gets you.
They don’t just understand what you’re saying. They understand what you mean.
They anticipate the next part of the story before you even get there.
They know, instinctively, what will make you laugh, what will make you spiral, what will make you feel safe.
And the best part? You never have to explain yourself.
You just are. And they just know.
That’s what makes a real connection — whether it’s with a friend, a client, or the people reading your website.

How To Make Them Get That You GET Them
When your readers land on your website, they should feel that same relief, like:
“Oh thank God, this is for me. They get it. They get ME. I could belly laugh with them from the other side of a pillow fort, I think.”
And yet, most website copy doesn’t do that.
Most website copy is forced “hey girlie” energy, painfully generic (using the same adjectives and background story and selling points as every other person in the industry...), and so vague it could belong to anyone.
If you want people to instantly trust you, they need to feel like you already understand them before they even reach out.
So how do you do that?
👉 You use their words, not jargon or expert-level speak or no-one-actually-says-this-shit-out-loud-professional-girl-boss-crap, to meet them where they're at and show that you're an insider (either in their industry or in their brain).
👉 You name their specific frustrations (again, in their words!) before you start selling, helping them feel comfortable with you + proving your deep understanding of their problem, their world, and their needs.
👉 You show the transformation by illustrating not only how they get from Point A to Point B, but defining what point A is, and explaining why Point B is so much better for them, and how you, specifically, are going to get them there.
👉 You acknowledge their hesitations before they do, so they can see that you truly understand how their mind works.
Because the real secret to writing a website that SELLS?
Making your reader feel like you’re already in their world, speaking a language only the two of you understand.
