TOC #209: I'd rather fix your teeth than your toys
(December 24, 2024) The art of the Mini About
Last week's Christmas letter might have been the annoying kind, but today's is genuine.
If you celebrate Christmas, hope you're spending today with your loved ones, enjoying a much-needed break.
If you don't, I still hope you're out there somewhere enjoying a much-needed break.
I don't know about you, but this year took a TOLLLL ON MEEEE, despite being one of the best years of my life in so many ways.
(More on that next time, though — you kow I send my “Epilogue” of the year every single year, and this year's falls right on my birthday. How convenient to review a year of life and a year of life.)
I, for one, am opening presents with my family, drinking hot chocolate, and watching Rudolph the Red Nosed reindeer.
And speaking of… the most 🦷 iconic 🦷 character from that movie actually has something to teach you today 👇🏻
Infusing personality into your website copy isn’t always easy, especially when you don’t know what to say.
As a website copywriter, one of the main reasons my clients reach out to work with me is because they don’t feel like their website sounds like them, but they’re not sure how to fix it.
They don’t know which facts are relevant, or they feel weird about talking about themselves, ORRR they don’t know WHERE on their website it’s appropriate to share more info about who they are.
And that, my shnookums, is where what I call the “MINI ABOUT” comes in!
(Before we move on, it is very important to my ego that you know that I'm the one who created this term back in 2021. Website Girls everywhere, you're welcome.)
A “Mini About” is exactly what it sounds like: a small section on a given webpage where you introduce yourself to your reader, and make things feel more like a conversation, and less like your website is just a bunch of boring info thrown at them.
You can read more about what a Mini About is, where you can put it, and how to use it on your site right here — but since it's Christmas Eve, I thought we could have a little fun instead…
Here's a Mini About for Wesley's & my favorite character of the most nostalgic Christmas movie ever:
Hi, I'm Dr. Hermey — and I'd way rather take care of your teeth than build your toys.
If you know anything about Santa's Workshop, you know that^ statement is enough to get me completely excommunicated from the entire elf community.
What my fellow elves don't realize, though, is that I have the same goal that they do:
MAKE PEOPLE SMILE BRIGHTER.
They improve smiles by making toys, but *I* improve smiles by making crooked teeth straight, removing painful cavities, and keeping gums healthy.
& while a trip to the dentist's office may not invoke as much cheer as opening a Christmas present, the gift of healthy teeth will last you a lifetime.

*and scene!*
I low key want to write Hermey's entire site now… his story is just too good! I'm sure if he were real, he'd be down for that brand voice direction.

Because what's an ADHDer if not a little late for the deadline? Of course, I meant to share this with you earlier, but… who doesn't love going back online and shopping for themselves once they open presents and see what Santa *didn't* bring? 👀
I hope you're having a very Merry Christmas 🎄 TTFN! xo, S
