TOC #199: There's someone at your door
(October 15, 2024) Spooky Sales Page Mistakes To Avoid
It was a dark and stormy night.
Well, not really.
There was no storm. And it was barely dark out.
But it felt like a dark and stormy night when the CHILL creeped up my spine the second I saw the Ring notification:
There's someone at your door.
Now, normally that notification isn't something I'd find so menacing, but I'd made a big mistake about 20 minutes prior:
I'd started watching a scary movie by myself.
In October.
In my old ass house.
My creepy at night old ass house.
I could have chosen something with a nice, wholesome, comforting rom-com vibe — everyone and their mother has been bullying me to watch Nobody Wants This on Netflix — but no0o0o.
MY dumb ass made the classic October mistake of watching a scary movie. Alone.
You know the type: jump-scares in every scene, shadows moving in the background, freaky masks, the whole nine.
At first, I was chill.
Obviously.
I'm a big girl. A strong independent woman who don't need no man.
…but, about 20 minutes in, every little creak in my cute baby (haunted?) house started to sound like the beginning of the end.
The inside of my head started to sound like this:
*creak* - "What the fuck was that?"
*creak* - "Did I lock the door?"
*creak* - "Is there someone in the attic?"
& of course, my ✨ LOGICAL ✨ brain was aware that, duh, it's an old house, it settles and moves, it makes noises, it's fine.
(And even if there ARE ghosts, they're friendly. I talk to them often.)
(This is not my first experience living in a haunted house.)
(Be thankful I didn't tell you the story of Wesley's conception, because that was almost the road we headed down this morning, given the haunted house theme, but then I decided that was a little inappropriate, even for me.)
But, despite my best efforts to listen to that logical part, my house went*creak* - again.
My brain: "Is there someone outside?"
Then, half a second later, my Ring notifications:
"There's a person at your door."
First name / Bestie when I tell you I was SPOOKED as spooked can be…...
I was about to dial 9-1-1, my father, my neighbor, my cousin, my ex boyfriend, and my pastor all at once bc after that psycho lady from Facebook Marketplace I WAS NAWTTTT PLAYING.
Half of me didn't even want to GET a Ring doorbell bc I'm such an ~ignorance is bliss~ girlie that I'd quite literally rather *not know* than see the potential robber / murderer / enchantress from Beauty And The Beast standing at my door…
But, like I said, I'm a big girl.
So, I mentally prepared myself to check the app — and check the closet for a baseball bat — and clicked on the notification.
And it was a fucking video of my blowup Jack Skellington that had fallen over on my porch.
The terrifying intruder I'd been ready to die at the hands of?
Polyester and air.
Spooky Sales Page Mistakes To Avoid
#1 👻 Not clearly defining your offer (or its intended audience!) before writing your sales page.
How are you supposed to sell something if you can't clearly explain who it's for or why they'd want it?
Just like I assumed the worst without knowing what was really at my door, your readers can’t understand what you’re offering if you don’t spell it out. If you’re vague about who your product is for or what it actually does, people will fill in the blanks—and they might not guess what you intended.
#2 👻 Not showing the transformation your offer provides.
Giving your readers a specific, example-rich illustration of the before-and-after proves that you know your audience well enough to take them from where they ARE to where they want to be.
When I first got the notification from Ring, I was left guessing what was happening outside.
Your potential customers shouldn’t have to guess what your offer will do for them. Show them a clear transformation from Point A to Point B so they can see exactly how your product or service will help them go from where they are to where they want to be—no guesswork involved!
#3 👻 Not appropriately addressing your readers' objections.
Chances are, your readers aren't clicking on your sales page completely cold. They prob have an idea of whether or not they want the thing; they just have some questions they need answered first in order to help get them off the fence.
I could’ve saved myself a lot of stress by checking my Ring notification sooner, just like your readers can feel more confident about hitting "buy" when you’ve answered all their questions.
By addressing their objections and providing the information they need, you’re helping them feel good about making the right decision. Your sales page should give them the reassurance that they’re in the right place and ready to take action!
