TOC #173: Now, how do you ASK???
(April 16, 2024) 4 Signs Your Site Isn't Working For You The Way You Want It To
One thing I never thought I'd be saying 14 times a day?
“Now, how do you ASK????”
I don't know why, but when my 4-year-old makes demands instead of requests, it annoys me more than when he yells “1, 2, 3, let's go bitch!” in front of the wrong audience.
(Swifties get it.)
“I want a popsicle.” Okay, cool? Are you telling me, or are you asking me?
“Chocolate milk, please.” Alright, halfway there, but… still not quite.
“Mommy, I want a snack plate!” That's nice, Woo. I want a Cape house.
Every time he makes these statements, I'm stuck between should I do this? and that's not how you ask for something you want in my weird “obviously I know what he means, but I still need to be a good parent and teach him proper manners” inner debate.
I reckon (🤠) that's how a lot of readers feel, too, when they land on a website that is thiiiis close 🤏🏼 to getting the message right, but doesn't quite hit when it comes to ACTUALLY taking ACTION.
The website copy gets them halfway there… but then they're stuck in the “so, should I do this? I think it's right, but, I'm not quite sure?” — and then, because this is the Internet, and not a parenting lesson, they side with the “eh, whatever, bye” and hit the back button, moving on to someone else whose website actually makes the desired action CLEAR.
4 Signs Your Site Isn't Working For You The Way You Want It To
Nervous people are hitting the back button on YOUR site, but not sure WHY? It's probably one of these 4 reasons…
😬
#1 — People are visiting your website, but aren't taking action.
You can SEE in your analytics that people ARE visiting your website, but… then they're just… not doing anything?
They're clicking around, but they're not clicking inquire, or buy now, or sign up.
And why do you think that is? 👀
They either don't know how (you've given them 0 direction about how to actually take action) OR they're not convinced that your brand is the right choice (your website copy hasn't done its job).
#2 — You're getting questions, instead of clients.
If people are reaching out to you to ask you QUESTIONS, instead of simply inquiring about your services (or signing up for your courses, or purchasing your products), you've absolutely got a website copy problem.
Your website copy's responsible for answering your readers' questions before they even have to ask them.
So, if you're getting questions instead of clients… you know what you've gotta fix.
#3 — You don't feel like your website is adequately representing you.
If you feel awkward about sending people to your website, or you find yourself giving the “oh, um, I… haven't updated it in a while…” disclaimer every time someone asks for your link, well 🤭 I think you know where I'm going with this.
Your website copy should feel like the MOST accurate representation of who you are as a person and as a brand, because it's the ONLY place on the Internet where you completely control the narrative.
Your site is the #1 place you should absolutely feel confident in showing off, because it's your place. Your house. The one you own. The one you welcome your people into; the one you make them feel at home, too.
Sprucing up your website copy = how you get that home ready for hosting.
#4 — You're not getting inquiries from the right people.
Sure, you may be getting inquiries right now… but are they from the RIGHT people?
People you actually WANT to work with?
Who don't question your process or pricing?
Who have cool ass projects you can't wait to work on?
Who trust and value your expertise?
Who don't make your life a living hell with their red flag vibes?
Who make you feel excited to get back to work each day?
If you're not getting consistent inquiries from those types of people — the ones you started your business to help — then it very well could be (read: almost definitely is) a website copy problem.
…but, before you can even begin to think about the website issue, I recommend starting with the attract dream clients issue.
FREE WORKSHOP: HOW TO ATTRACT THE RIGHT PEOPLE & CONVINCE THEM TO BUY FROM YOU
In this FREE (!!!) workshop on May 7th at 1pm, I'm teaching you all about how to figure out who YOUR people are, how to ensure those people find you online, AND how to get those people to CARE about what you're saying, so they can buy what you're selling.
& that's it! Now, just a few reminders before I let you go enjoy your Tuesday…
FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO MAKE MORE $$$ —
Figuring out who you're selling to is the first step. Then, learning how to get them to notice you. Then, of course, how to get them to care about what you're selling.
Learn how to do that right here.
FOR COPYWRITERS WHO WANT TO UNLOCK THEIR NEXT CHAPTER —
My small group mentorship program is kicking off next month, and spots are filling up so quickly! There are 4 left, and early bird pricing is available until 4/30.
People have been telling me they're most excited about the website copy audit & client process audit that comes with it – but I know from past experience that my mentees find the 24/7 access to me for questions and support to be the most helpful part 🤠
Join Success Story here! Payment plans are available, and you'll love this group.
FOR BUSINESS OWNERS WHO NEED WEBSITE COPY —
…but I'm currently booking new projects for October.
HOWEVERRRR: I'm taking on projects starting in MAY, to do alongside my group of mentees, so they can see how a client project works from start to finish.
So, if you want to have not one copywriter but SEVERAL copywriters work together to write your website copy (or sales page copy, or email copy), inquire now. ILY.
FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO WRITE THEIR OWN WEBSITE COPY —
FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO WRITE THEIR OWN SALES PAGE —
You will definitely want this. It's ridiculously cheap for what it is.
(Until probably about June, when I have it in me to update the sales page to actually reflect its value, and, as a result, get around to updating it to the appropriate price.)
& NOOOWWWWW, I'm done.
Love,
—S
