TOC #104: I Lost 15,600 Followers In One Second
(Dec 20, 2022) 5 Reasons Email Marketing Will Be Your Most Powerful Tool In 2023
Well, it finally happened to me:
The social media apocalypse that every marketing expert uses as motivation to get people to care about email marketing. š«
Over the weekend, I was in a mood. My sad girl era, if you will.Ā
I knew I needed to get out of my lil funk, but Woo was sick, so going out and existing in the world wasn't really an option.
Naturally, I decided to escape to the best, most productive place I knew: Pinterest.Ā
In that moment specifically, I was feeling especially motivated to stalk Pinterest for some much-needed 2023 vision board content, healthy dinner recipe ideas, and standing desk style inspo (I am now officially That Girl with my walking pad!), as one does.Ā
ā¦but before I could get into the groove of the scroll-and-save combo I'd been fantasizing about since my feral lil man woke me up at the crack of dawn, the nightmare the experts had warned us about came true.Ā
The dreaded error message.
Stating the even-more-dreaded truth: your account has been deactivated.
My first thought? šš¼ Oh, this is a mistake.
My second thought? šš¼ For the love of all things holy, let this be a mistake.Ā
My third thought? šš¼ Wait, frick. Maybe it's not a mistake. I was famous on Pinterest. I've spent and made thousands of dollars on Pinterest. This can't be happening.Ā
My fourth thought? šš¼ Oh, well. Can't cry over spilt milk. At least I still have my email list.
And then I went about my day, hoping for the best, preparing for the worst, and feeling indifferent about losing 15,600+ followers on the platform I'd been growing for 2.5 years.Ā
Does it suck to lose your largest social media following in an instant? Yeah, obviously.Ā
Would it suck way more if I didn't have a backup plan? Yeah, obviously.Ā
Soā¦ let's talk about that backup planāand why having it is necessary for both your sanity and your business's bottom line.Ā
5 Reasons Email Marketing Will Be Your Most Powerful Tool In 2023
Okay, let's be real: losing access to my Pinterest account is the worst news ever.Ā
Will I get it back? Maybe. Hopefully. I don't know. I'm praying I do, because it's been a huge growth factor for my business this year, second only toā¦
Email marketing.Ā
Now, before you write me off, and complain about how much work it is (not that much) and how much time it takes (not that much) and how it's cool for other people but not you (no it isn't) and and and and andā¦ I don't wanna hear it.Ā
Instead, I wanna tell you WHY email marketing is such a powerful tool. And then, if you'll let me, I'd like to help you harness it.Ā
#1 - Email isn't dead.Ā
Forget what you've readāemail is still alive & well. In fact, according to a report from the Radicati Group, the number of worldwide email users is expected to reach 4.3 billion in 2023, representing more than half of the world's population.Ā
You know what this means? That email is an effective, reliable way for businesses to reach and engage with their audience, and it shouldn't be ignored.Ā
If you know how to leverage it, email marketing could become your best marketing tool of 2023.Ā
#2 - Email allows for target, personalized communication with your ideal audience.Ā
Especially if you use a really awesome lead magnet or fomo-inducing newsletter to motivate people to subscribe to your list.Ā
#3 - Email is the perfect integration with your other social media platforms.Ā
Ummmā¦ hello, content repurposing?! The content you use for your emails can easily be transformed into Instagram captions or stories or reels, blog posts, TikToks, Pinterest posts or idea pins, YouTube videos, podcast episodes, free webinar topicsā¦ you get the picture.Ā Ā
Plus, the more you grow your socials, the wider net you're able to cast when you promote your email list. The growth goes hand-in-hand.Ā
#4 - Email is cost-effective.
Compared to other forms of digital marketing, email marketing can be relatively inexpensive and can offer a good return on investment.Ā
The only thing I pay for when it comes to email marketing is my email service provider, Flodesk, which allows me to create opt-in forms, workflows, segments, email sequences, newsletters, full-page forms, checkout pages, and so much more. & it's really affordable!Ā
(If we're being technical, I also use Canva to create lead magnetsātheir new feature, Canva Docs, is an absolute game-changer for this!ābut you can 100% exist on the free version of that platform with no issues.)
#5 - Email analytics are super easy to track.
It is super easy to track and measure the success of email campaigns (which can help your business to optimize your strategies and improve results!) no matter which email service provider you use.Ā
You can see can see everything: who clicked what & when, how many people opened it, who unsubscribed, how well a certain lead magnet performs, reader retention rateā¦ every statistic you want, you've got.
There are about a trillion more reasons why email marketing is going to be absolutely crucial to your 2023 content marketing plan, butā¦Ā
I'll leave you with this for now: I attribute pretty much ALL of my success in 2022 to my email list, from course launches to client work to authority in the copywriting space.
& I want to help you achieve the same results. š Click here to find out how you can learn about email marketing from me in 2023!

As for me: I'll be entertaining a completely cray-cray toddler (Christmas edition: the most wild of them all), stuffing my face with these (a crowd-pleaser among the friends I made cookies for!), beaming from ear to ear as my loved ones open their presents, finishing the last of Elin Hilderbrand's Winter Street series, and, very unfortunately, no longer talking to fish boy. ā¹ļø
