🐚 BEACH CHAIR BUSINESS
Around this time last year, I was feeling overwhelmed with all the things I had to do for the 85 businesses I run, the 850 tabs open in my brain, and the 8500 responsibilities I have.
So, naturally, I decided to make a list.
I called this list “BTL EVERYTHING LIST” and wrote down every single thing I wanted to make happen / didn’t know how to make happen / didn’t want to be the one to figure out how to make happen.
Every single thing I thought would ~move the needle forward~ in my business found its spot on that list, and then some.
At the time, I thought maybe hiring a “tech VA” would help, because I was getting bogged down with the bullshit of Thrivecart and support emails and Stripe payment issues and blah blah blah…
I didn’t want to be responsible for all the STUFF. I wanted to write copy, teach copy, send emails, and just live my chatterbox truth.
It became clear that SOMEONEEEEE had to come save me from myself and my manic episode launches and my impulses and my squirrel brain, so I asked for recommendations on Threads with a STRICT no fuck ass pitch policy.
I got tons of responses, tons of pitches (most of them good!), interviewed tons of people, and narrowed it down to one Squirrel Wrangler…
Now, having worked with an OBM for an entire year, I can confirm a few things for you:
Great choice on my part. Squirrel brain less full.
Hiring help only works if you give up a little control, let someone else in, and make your best effort to move the things that live in your head onto that person’s plate.
Just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean you SHOULD do something, or that you’re the right person to do it.
Your Beach Chair Business Task for the week is to make that list.
Then, decide if YOU want to be the person doing all the things on the list.
If not, it might be time to look into hiring help…
OR it might be time to think about why you DON’T want to be the one doing all that stuff - is it because you genuinely don’t like it / don’t know how to do it? Or is it because you have other things to do… that maybe should be outsourced instead of hiring help?
Up to you baby boo I’m just here to tell you about my experience 🤪
🐚 JOURNAL PROMPTS FOR SQUIRRELS
If making The List doesn’t work for you, try one or some of these journal prompts to help you figure out what’s going on in your squirrel brain (or, better yet, your squirrel business) ↓
If someone took over one part of your business tomorrow, what would you immediately hand them?
What tasks live in your head instead of somewhere you can actually see them?
Which business responsibilities make you feel energized? Which ones make you procrastinate for days?
What are you holding onto simply because “I’ve always done it”?
Which tasks could someone else probably do 80% as well as you, but you’re still clinging to them?
What’s one thing you’ve convinced yourself “only I can do”? Is that actually true?
If you could only work 15 hours a week, what would you stop doing first?
What are you spending time on that doesn’t actually require your unique skills?
Which tasks make you feel like the CEO of your business? Which ones make you feel like unpaid IT support?
What’s one thing you keep meaning to figure out, but secretly wish someone else would just handle?
If your business had a suggestion box, what would it beg you to stop doing?
Where are you confusing being busy with being necessary?
What would your business look like if your only job was the work you genuinely love doing?
What keeps you from asking for help: money, trust, guilt, perfectionism, or something else?
